Daniel Ross joined YouthServe as Program Director in October 2014.  Before coming to YS, Daniel worked as a Research Assistant at UAB and was a Fellow with the Birmingham Education Foundation.  As a Fellow, he managed a college preparation program for Birmingham City students. His love for service comes from volunteering with disaster relief efforts following the tornados of April 27th.  When asked “Why do you believe in the power of youth serving in communities?” he responded; “Community service connects youth with bigger issues that impact them and their neighbors. Through service, they can achieve a better understanding of their ability to lead service that shapes their community.”  Daniel earned a B.A. from the University of West Alabama and a M.P.A. in nonprofit management from UAB.  His wife teaches in Chalkville and his son is a rambunctious one-year-old. Outside of work, he enjoys family time, running, and reading.  Email Daniel at dross@youthservebham.org

Shaina Elise Hamby is a veteran when it comes to working with Youthserve. She began her journey 6 years ago at age 14, at her mother’s persistence. However unsure she was at first, she quickly fell in love with what the program had to offer, gaining respect for the organizations they helped as well as lifelong connections. Over the following years she became a camp regular as well as an active participant in the weekend and holiday service days. When she was sixteen she became a member of the Youth Action Council, which led to her becoming a counselor at the Urban Service Camp two years in a row! Shaina attends the University of Alabama at Birmingham as a Psychology major in her sophomore year. She enjoys dancing, rock climbing, and trampolining. Now she joins the Youthserve team as a YWCA State AmeriCorps member serving as one of two program assistants. And is looking forward to what the year has to offer! Email Shay at shaina@youthservebham.org
